John Woroschuk - Woodshed CD
A Drive-Thru Record - Vol. 2
Charming doodles
Sept 15 2005-Dec 9 2005
Paris,France
I guess it's been awhile since we got back from Paris, but it's something that
seems to settle inside you forever. My girlfriend and I decided "hey lets go to
Paris for a while!" So that's just what we did. The idea was to do a little playing
with Miss Wendy Mcneill and see that part of the world, maybe stick around if things
got interesting. Well I did get the opportunity to do a guest appearance at Wendy's
show at Roepan in Holland, but the timing wasn't right for any other shows.
The Roepan show was very cool, however, and you should go to Wendy's website (links
page) to check out her upcoming music. Mostly we just saw what Paris and Barcelona
and Valencia and Girona had to offer (which of course is a lot). I recommend this kind
of trip to anybody looking to shake things up and get a different take on life. Now
I am back in Edmonton and writing songs and doing demos for another record.
Hey everyone. I have had a great summer so far, here are some of the hi-lites!
Sun Aug 28 2005-Hawrelak park heritage ampitheatre-Skelterfest w/Justin
Rutledge - A sunday afternoon music concert headlined by Edmonton's Captain
Tractor. All my pals were playing on the bill and I got to sit in with Justin again on
steel guitar. The sound was excellent and I think we played a good little set. Justin's
got some great new songs and It'll be exciting to hear the new record
when it comes out.
Sat Aug 20 2005 4pm - Black Dog freehouse w/Jody Shenkarek and John Blerot
Jody asked me to sit in with herself on acoustic and John on Keys/Accordian.
Jody's songs are a real treat to play on, they are rooted in country but
without the cliches. I did some steel guitar and electric guitar and we had
a good time. The crowd was real nice, mostly friends and neighbors, and
Ayla Brook was moonlighting from AA sound system doing some mixing. A nice
way to spend a saturday afternoon.
Tues Aug 9 2005-Sidetrack Cafe with Abe Wells-So I'm wandering thru the Beer
Garden at the Edmonton Folk Festival on Sunday and I run into Abe Wells. He says "I have
a show on Tuesday, do you want to play?" It had been a while since we played
together so I said yes. We opened it up for Bramwell Park and the Leftovers
and John Guliak and the New Lougans. A Tuesday night with Nachos and music.Just as
Edmonton as it gets.
Sun Aug 7 2005- Edmonton folk festival- I had a lot of fun playing with Wendy Mcneill at
Calgary's folk festival, and I was happy that she wanted to play together again.
We played "such a common bird" and "black angus" as well as a song called "out
where the living was wild" from her forthcoming cd. I think her fans will really love
her new songs and I am excited to be playing some shows in Europe with her.
She's a champ.
Fri Aug 5 2005-Shuyler Jansen's Saskatoon bon voyage- Shuyler is going to move
out to Saskatoon and he wanted folks to come down and play songs with
him and the Hobotron. I had a blast playing with Trav Short, Gravy, Lane Arndt,
and the man himself at the old sidetrack. See that Hobotron when you get a
chance, you'll kick yourself if you miss it.
Tues Aug 2 2005-Recording session- Anyone who's lived in Edmonton for a
while knows local rennaissance man John Broomfield. As well as being a poet
and a visual artist he's also a talented musician. I contributed some steel guitar
to his song "16 in April", in true John Broomfield fashion I received a thank you
note in the mail with a Cafe Mosaics gift certificate and a large chocolate bar.
July 20-24 2005-Calgary. I was hired to play steel guitar in a band assembled for Justin
Rutledge's Calgary Folk festival Appearance. The band included Shuyler Jansen on
Baritone guitar, Jody Johnson on electric and upright basses and vocals, Marek
Tyler on Drums and myself (Robin Hunter) on steel guitar.* Justin hails from
Toronto via the U.K. and Spruce Grove AB, and Canmore AB. (it's complicated, talk
to him about it.) and writes and sings these great, moody songs. Our job was to
provide a texture that was parallel, but not a copy of the musical backing on his
excellent cd, " No never alone." Shuyler and I showed up at Saved by Radio HQ
and said our hellos to Owen and Justin and Mr. Matt Masters and set up our gear
and took a load off. Marek showed up soon after and we rehearsed and ate what
seemed like $1500 worth of sushi. Next day more rehearsing and Justin and I did
a "tweener" between big shots Hawksley Workman and Jeff Tweedy on the main
stage Thurs. night. Interesting experience. Next day, no folkfest stuff but a tv
appearance on Calgary's the A channel (now city tv). Justin and I again appeared
as a duo (like Butch Cassidy and the Sundance kid with guitars instead of guns)
Saturday comes and I get a chance to sit in at a workshop with Justin and Ron
Sexsmith and then I run over to Wendy Mcneill's concert and play with her. I'm
feelin' busy now. Sunday comes along and it's two workshops with Justin (also
includes Thea Gilmore,Mary Gauthier,Ron Hynes,Wendy Mcneill,Sarah Harmer, the
Swiftys and Gurf Morlix, Jim Kirkpatrick, Nigel Stonier and Mary's guitar player and drummer
who's names have escaped me and can't be found on her website or the Calgary folkfest site. Forgive me fellas, you were great. The Concert with Justin and the full band (see Justin's
drawings of us at http://www.justinrutledge.com
) was next and It was a lot of fun we played a real rocked out version of
"special" and had a wonderful audience to play for. After the concert I ran
over to play a workshop with Greg Leisz, Tim Williams, Marc Thibeault,Jenny Lester
and Bob Hamilton. That's lots.
July 19 2005- Australian television taping Jasper,Alberta. I was asked to play with
Old Reliable on a tv show called "Mornings with Kerri-Anne." You see, Swifty had
a prior engagement at Sherwood Park's Festival place with the Swiftys and had to
bow out. I was going to Calgary with Shuyler anyway so there I was, playing some
steel guitar on a very high-rated Australian tv show. Unfortunately,we couldn't stick
around for any meet and greet session due to our pressing schedule, but I send her
my warmest regards and hope that Western Canada was good to her and her wonderfully
pro Crew. Thanks for the cool experience.
July 15-17 2005- The South Country Fair. Another fun show with Mr. John Woroschuk
leading us on the resonator and mandolin. We played Sunday afternoon after a great
weekend of camping with 70 billion mosquitos. I wanted to announce over the P.A.
system during our concert that there were other people at the fair besides me that
they could feast on, but there is no guarantee that mosquitos understand english.
July 7 2005- played at the Edmonton Valley zoo for the zoo groove concert series as a
member of John Woroschuk's Auto pilots. We played selected stuff from John's
"Woodshed" cd and The Bullies "your heart my sleeve" cd. Woody,Thom and myself
were augmented mightily by Mr. Marek Tyler of AA sound system fame on the
Drumolas. The only upset mammal was a young bear. We'll have to learn a lullaby
or two for next time. Thanks to Terry Mcdade for the event coordination.
